Ok to help keep the guilds and support questions separated, I've opened this thread to help us all with some of the questions and observations when installing Windows XP on the XXXX in 1 board.
Please post all questions & information pertaining to the upgrade here and not in the guild created.
Thank you

1) I would like some suggestions posted here for everyone on eliminating the excess filler in windows that takes up resorces...
2) Hiding windows ideas...
I found a link that has suggestions
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Hiding_Windows
anyone else have tricks they wish to add ? |

Ok i've got just about everything set up, all the buttons and joysticks work, etc. Now i'm just having issues with sound stuttering in games. I wonder if its got anything to do with having triple buffering on? Also i can't seem to get maximus to function at all. When i boot to the mame menu nothing seems to work, i can't scroll through games or anything. Starting to wonder if this was all worth. I've got my 1201-in-1 hdd back in it right now, cuz i'm tired of messing with windows, mame settings and front ends. Maybe i'll give it another go tonight or tomorrow night and see if i can't get things going better. Any input is appreciated.
My setup: xxxx-in-1 with 2.8ghz cpu + 1280mb RAM with windows xp home and mameui v127 with about 6000+ roms, Linksys wireless g network card, 160gb HDD, 20x DVD/CD Reader/Writer. |

| Also i'd like to mention its best to keep your monitor in 800x600 mode while configuring mame and then once everything is all set up, then switch to 640x480, but that should be the last thing you do. |

Their is a setting in the server options to have UVNC start on start up. I'll double check at home. Mine does start on boot so I know their is one, but don't recall how I did it.

glad I'm not the only one with this issue... same bag, just not really looked into it much yet. Should have some time tonight to take a look. Or you can try what you suggested and report back.
in maximus you have to enable the joysticks to work in the menu. I played around with it for a few hours, but stopped since it supports one version of mame and I want 3 or 4
in maxi... right click options and setup the controlls.
btw: I went with MaLa for my FE
Keep in mind this is a work in progress and it will be painful for the first little while... trial and error
I did most of my mame.ini editting on my main pc and just shoot it back over with vnc. |

http://articles.networktechs.com/printer-69.html << Heres an article that will help you strip alot of junk out of windows that you won't need expecially in a mame setup.
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm << This will show you what services to shut down to minimize the load on your system. Its meant for xp with sp3, but alot of it can be used on windows running sp2. Plus if you need to turn a service back on, its easy enough to do. But minimizing the load is definately going to help with mame. |

on the xxxx - start programs/ultravnc/ultravnc server/install winvnc service silent
on the next reboot a lil icon will be on the xxxx machines task bar
took me an hour to work that out
ive got a doozy now
for some reason after rebooting the xxxx the clock resets to 2003 or something
didnt worry me, who needs a clock on a mame machine ?
but this caused my demo of maximus arcade to expire after 1 reboot
shouldnt going back in time give me a longer demo period ?
anyway a warning to others - try to fix the clock first
this clock reset i think has something to do with the bios being reset to default settings at startup - this also causes me to lose my ethernet each time too
it wont reset with a reboot, only with a full power off/ power on
there must be a jumper somewhere - i will look into it |

Ok well the problem with maximus is i cannot get it to remap the controls, it will not load them up from mame as it says the file is not compatible and manually inserting the values in the cfg file doesn't help either. I'm starting to think that if you want to run windows xp then you should start off with a regular pc and just get the arcadevga card and jpac, i've been messing with this for 3 days now and have not gotten anywhere. Sure everything works ok in mameui32 but i can't seem to get a front end to do jack squat. The only thing i've been able to get maximus to do is scroll through the games if i hold the 2p 1 button down and use the 2p joystick and then to launch a game you have to press buttons 1 & 2 on the 1p side. The only problem is it will always launch the same game. Also when scrolling through the games list it jumps over several games at a time, so you can never get to a game you really want to play unless you get lucky. This could all be solved if the damn front end would allow me to remap the controls, but it will not, no matter what i do, nor will it load the controller cfg file as it says its invalid. This has been some kind of headache and to be honest i'm almost absolutely sure its not worth it. One a side note i was able to get the games to play smoothly and stop the sound from stuttering, so at least thats a plus.
Basically you need to change it from Direct3d to DirectDraw, and that will make everything smoother. |

| Also the MaLa website has been down for at least 3 days, so i cannot find anywhere to download it. MameWah doesn't seem to work at all, as it won't load the gameslist or do anything at all, i just get an odd screen when launching it. I'm really getting frustrated with these front ends, i mean its pretty obvious noone has ever sucessfully installed xp on the xxxx-in-1 and gotten mame and a front end to work properly. I'm probably just going to go back to the 1200-in-1 hdd and forget about xp for now, this is all just too frustrating, and time consuming. |
